Cavities Dentist Forest Hills

Cavities can be both painful and unsightly. Getting them repaired properly by a dental cavities dentist Forest Hills can help you enjoy eating more and not be worried about how your teeth look. Getting them repaired sooner will also help to keep the dental bill lower.

How Cavities Develop

Cavities are caused by the bacteria in your mouth. When they consume sugar and carbs, they produce acid. If the acid is not removed from your teeth often through the day, cavities will soon develop. The acid slowly erodes the enamel on your teeth. Eventually, the foods and drinks you consume will reach the nerve, causing pain. This will typically be salty or sweet foods, as well as being sensitive to temperature.

Some foods also contain acid. Citrus fruit and sodas are among the worst, and drinking these and leaving the acid on your teeth only speeds up cavity development.

Brushing your teeth right after eating or drinking acidic foods is not a good idea. The acid softens the enamel and brushing your teeth when softened will remove tiny flecks of it each time. Since your tooth enamel does not grow back, you should wait about 20 minutes or more before brushing.

Cavities Do Not Repair Themselves

While the foods you eat will help to resupply your teeth with minerals, your enamel will not grow back. It typically gets thinner as you age, but good oral care can help slow the process.

Dental Fillings

When repairing a tooth with a cavity in it, the dental cavities dentist Forest Hills will first numb the area. The decay will then be removed with a drill or laser. When completely removed, the tooth will then be sterilized and the filling material inserted.

Types of Fillings

There are five types of fillings. Each one has its benefits, as well as downsides. They include:

  • Gold Alloy – This is a mixture of gold with other metals. It will last longer than other types and is the most expensive.
  • Silver Amalgam – This common filling material uses a combination of metals with mercury. It is inexpensive and widely used. It is durable and can last for years.
  • Composite Resin – This filling material is tooth-colored but is softer and not as durable. It is a popular choice for people that want white teeth. It will last between five to seven years.
  • Ceramic – These fillings must be made in a lab. They are durable.
  • Glass Ionomers – Typically used in children whose teeth are still growing. Can be expected to last up to five years.

Preventing Cavities

It is less expensive to treat cavities when they are still small. Some things you can do to help prevent cavities include:

  • Avoid foods that are sticky
  • Do not snack on sweets all through the day
  • Rinse your mouth out with water after eating or drinking sugary or acidic foods
  • Brush for at least two minutes each time with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily
  • Avoid dry mouth – stay hydrated
  • Make regular dental appointments

If your teeth are sensitive or you have cavities, you can find a dental cavities dentist Forest Hills at Amazing Smile Dental in Brooklyn. Our dentists are friendly and we treat the whole family.
